This summer Klemm’s welcomes the artist collective it is part of an ensemble to turn the gallery into a shared studio and living space.

So… I came lugging this great heavy sack of stuff, my carrier bag full of wimps and klutzes, and tiny grains of things smaller than a mustard seed, and intricately woven nets which when laboriously unknotted are seen to contain one blue pebble, an imperturbable functioning chronometer telling the time on another world, and a mouse’s skull; full of beginnings without ends, of initiations, of losses, of transformations and translations, and far more tricks than conflicts, far fewer triumphs than snares and delusions; full of space ships that get stuck, missions that fail, and people who don’t understand. (Ursula K. Le Guin)

Collectively, we are planning to bring bags full of pencils, scissors, paint, records, instruments and books. We bring paper as carriers for the voices from our network. We want to keep this summer project lightweight and lighthearted. Collecting marks, observations and ideas – drawings and collages will arise without any predetermined plan, but as a residue of a shared experience.

Within the collective many approaches to the medium of drawing can be found. Drawing can be used as a tool for reproduction but also as a pathway to an imaginary world, it can be an act of noticing but also bring about a yet invisible reality. It can trace rhythms and mark time. In all cases drawing pulls you into the moment. It is the most direct form to share ideas and develop new ones. Its immediate physicality makes it easy to respond and continue. By layering and the use of assemblage the storytelling through drawing transcends individual accounts, in collaborating creativity is pushed outside the self and becomes something that’s maintained and cared for collectively. As forms of expanded drawing, music, performance and film are dragged into this project as well. Jam sessions will be initiated, which in turn could inspire the shapes and patterns in our drawings. A video camera will trace our movements. Performers will draw in space, and script our drawings.

From 22nd of August until 2nd of September the space will be open to the public during the regular gallery hours. A closing event will be held on Friday 1st of September.

it is part of an ensemble

We are a multitude in the form of a collective. Our numbers fluctuate. We are artists, performers, dancers, actors, musicians, students, theoreticians, in different stages of development, different ages, different cultures, all walks of life. We wear the complications and contradictions of this multitude on our sleeves. Together we do residencies and organize projects, make exhibitions, performances, publications and teach, develop theater plays and record music. We sometimes literally live together, we cook and eat together, we paint, print, draw, film, jam, we read and discuss texts, visit exhibitions or take long walks. Central is (re)thinking: how do we live together, how do we work together? How do we shape our ‘togetherness’?
