Peggy Buth, Patterned Bodies, 2008, exhibition view, KLEMM'S, Berlin

Peggy Buth
Patterned Bodies
04/04 – 05/10/2008

In her work Peggy Buth questions social power structures consisting of rules of conduct, institutions, traditionally assigned roles and strategies of (self-)representation. In recent years she has developed an exceptional application of material, which refers to the above-mentioned coherences by symbolism, function and appearance and hence conflates conceptual energy with an authentic aesthetic.
The way Buth works her materials, how she countersinks carpets, scratches glass plates or etches symbols and writings in tar pieces, holds sometimes an open and sometimes latently perceivable aggression. Every single work is thoughtfully crafted and can be read independently. Depending on the context the different works are put together in an intense line of association.
For 'Patterned Bodies' Peggy Buth expands her repertoire and intersects her established wall-pieces with video-projections and conceptual photography. Her artist book 'Desire in Representation', additionally functions as an integral part of the exhibition and marks a point of reference for the ensemble of the other work.

We particularly would like to draw your attention to the presentation of the artist book ‘Desire in Representation’ by Peggy Buth on Saturday, 04/26/2008 at 6 p.m., and invite you to a conversation with the artist, Beatrice von Bismarck, Astrid Wege and Till Gathmann. Press release ...
